Qualifications are central to being able to offer high quality leadership and management

There is a wide range of qualifications available to suit all leaders and managers in the adult care sector.


Higher Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care – Care Leadership and Management – Level 5

The higher apprenticeship is for those in a manager or business development role in adult social care, or for those who need a high level of knowledge or specific specialism. It has two pathways - a general and a specialist pathway.

This will be replaced by the new Apprenticeship: Leader in adult care (level 5) on 1st September 2018 which is currently in development.

Apprenticeship: Lead Practitioner in Adult Care (level 4) – currently in development

Lead Practitioner in Adult Care will guide and inspire team members to make positive differences to someone’s life when they are faced with physical, practical, social, emotional or intellectual challenges. They will have achieved a level of self-development to be recognised as a lead practitioner within the care team, contributing to, promoting and sustaining a values-based culture at an operational level. They will have specialist skills and knowledge in their area of responsibilities which will allow them to lead in areas such as care needs assessment, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and enablement, telecare and assistive technology. They will be a coach and mentor of others and will have a role in assessing performance and quality of care delivery. Lead Practitioners in Adult Care may work in residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres, a person’s own home or some clinical healthcare settings.

It's expected that this new apprenticeship will be available towards the end of 2018.

Diplomas and Certificates

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services

This is the current qualification recommended for those wishing to become a registered manager is the It provides learners with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage practice and lead others in adult care services.

You can choose one of the following pathways:

  • management of adult services
  • management of adult residential services

This qualification may also be undertaken as part of the Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management.

N.B. This Diploma is being replaced by the new Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Care.

Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care

This qualification will support learners to develop specialist knowledge and skills in their area of responsibility and enable learners to promote a values-based culture within their setting. This qualification can act as a progression route from the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care qualification to the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care qualification.

Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management in Adult Care

This qualification helps learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of leadership and management within adult care to bridge the gap between working at a care and support level and management roles. It maps closely to Skills for Care’s revised Manager Induction Standards and both align with the new Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care. As such the Level 4 Certificate is suitable for learners who are currently working at level 3 and aspire to progress into management. It can also be used by managers new in post as an accredited route to the Manager Induction Standards.

Manager Induction Standards (MIS)

Skills for Care’s Manager Induction Standards (MIS) set out what a manager needs to know and understand to perform well in their role. They can be used in all care settings and are a measure of good practice. The standards are:

  • Leadership and management
  • Governance and regulatory processes
  • Communication
  • Relationships and partnership working
  • Person-centred practice for positive outcomes
  • Professional development, supervision and performance management
  • Resources
  • Safeguarding, protection and risk
  • Manage self (New standard)
  • Decision making (New standard)
  • Entrepreneurial skills and innovation

Lead to Succeed

Lead to Succeed is a non-accredited learning programme, developed by Skills for Care, aimed at aspiring or new managers, and those who wish to refresh their knowledge of leading and managing. It is delivered by training providers under licence by Skills for Care and consists of 5 full-day workshops:

  • Successful behaviours for leaders and managers
  • Developing a positive culture
  • Effective Supervision
  • Leading and managing the process of change
  • Leading and managing the inspection process

A small number of training providers can offer this programme under licence from Skills for Care. The nearer provider is Training2Care, but a full list is available on the Skills for Care website.

Leadership and management in health and social care

This is an OU level 3 distance learning module. OU level 3 modules build on study skills and subject knowledge acquired from studies at OU levels 1 and 2. They are intended only for students who have recent experience of higher education in a related subject, preferably with the OU. It covers:

  • Approaching leadership and management
  • Managing relationships
  • Creating the caring environment
  • Leading for ethical and quality care

Leadership programmes from Skills for Care

Skills for Care has a number of leadership development programmes for social care leaders in varying roles, from managers to directors, who want to develop their leadership skills and learn alongside their peers. 

Generic leadership and management qualifications

As well as health and social care sector specific leadership and management qualifications there are generic management programmes that may also be of benefit, for example those from

Skills for Care's New Registered Managers Project – Norfolk pilot

By participating in the pilot, a cohort of 12 new managers in the county will be supported to develop their confidence, knowledge and skills over 12 months. Every manager taking part will also have the opportunity to engage with, and learn from, peers.

Places on this pilot are being offered at no cost and participants will be expected to commit to the full duration of the pilot.

Skills for Care are looking for people new to the registered manager role who, at the point of applying, have been in post for 12 months or less.

Managers taking part will:

  • participate in a programme of tailored Skills for Care events and webinars
  • benefit from peer support from other new managers in their area
  • tackle issues, challenges and opportunities through action learning
  • become registered manager members of Skills for Care

The Emerging Leaders programme

This is a project delivering leadership and management training to SMEs across Suffolk and Norfolk. The College of West Anglia and its partners were successful in tendering for £250,000 of European Social Fund money to deliver the Emerging Leaders programme. The funding is available until 31 March 2018.

The programme is open to employees aged 19+ working in SMEs registered in New Anglia.

The process starts with a training needs analysis carried out by an experienced assessor in discussion with the employer (free of charge) to identify business skills needs and ensure they meet the aspirations and vision of the business.

This process should then identify skills gaps for those employees showing potential to progress to team leader, supervisor or management positions.

The training can be in the form of accredited units from technical or management qualifications, or can be a bespoke programme designed with the help of the employer, to develop leadership skills of the employees.

The project is ESF funded and managed by The College of West Anglia working in partnership with the six other general FE colleges in the New Anglia LEP area. The seven colleges have come together to form the New Anglia Colleges Group and will be delivering the project as a partnership.
