Diabetic Foot Screening

The care workforce are in a fantastic position to inspect and implement (or assist with) everyday footcare for people living with diabetes, as well as potentially spot foot problems which can then be promptly dealt with. If appropriately trained, they can also carry out a diabetic foot assessment for people unable to attend an annual diabetic review at their surgery.

The Diabetic Foot Screening workshop is for all practitioners, from carers to trained professionals, who are involved in assessing the feet of people with diabetes. Using NICE guidance as a framework the workshop aims to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills to competently examine and assess the diabetic foot for potential and actual problems.

A practical session is included as well as the theory and importance behind a diabetic foot assessment. This workshop provides the tools/processes that are used to undertake an assessment and result in a risk score; the person performing the assessment is not required to make a clinical judgement. It covers:
• The definition of a foot ulcer
• When foot screening should be performed
• Who can undertake a diabetic foot assessment
• The factors contributing to someone developing a foot ulcer
• The method and steps to take when assessing the diabetic foot
• Local and national diabetic foot risk algorithms
• How to apply the correct risk score
• Suitable footwear for people with diabetes
• The causes of neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
• Practical demonstration on how to test for neuropathy and PVD
• The Ipswich Touch Test
• The process of referral for the person with diabetes at each level of risk

The cost is per person and includes a delegate pack, certificate and a copy of the post workshop Evaluation Report. Full payment must be made in advance (by BACS or cheque).
