Moving and Handling Refresher Training

Moving and Handling Update / Refresher

Extra Hands provide comprehensive training for individuals and companies across Norfolk.

Our Moving and Handling Training has been sourced by Residential Care Homes and other community professionals.

This training is a refresher / update of the full day course.

The aim is to ensure staff are still aware of the potential risks of injury to themselves and their Service Users and to update them on any legislative changes.

Competency of staff knowledge on how to eliminate unsafe practices and implement safe techniques is reviewed and observed.

Extra Hands Moving and Handling Update / Refresher Training covers:
• Understanding relevant legislation
• Anatomy of the spine
• Causes of back pain
• Assessing and reducing risks
• Basic principles of biomechanics
• Ergonomics
• Unsafe lifting practices
• Small handling aids
• Hoist and sling practical work

This is an interactive training session with practical involvement. Attendees are given training manuals to take away and a certificate of attendance issued.

This is a three hour course.

Medicines Management in Care Homes

The training course is designed to equip staff with the knowledge and skills they need to ensure the safe handling and administration of medicines. Our medicines management expertise will ensure that you are fully up-to-date with current guidelines and best practice across all areas of medicines management.

Our training courses are comprehensive, and suitable for staff from all care homes including those registered to accommodate people with dementia and learning difficulties. As well as nursing and residential care home staff, the courses are also suitable for all care agency staff.

Course topics include:

  • Regulations and the law
  • Medication journey
  • Record keeping
  • Safe administration and storage


Learning materials have been developed with reference to:

  • NICE guidelines
  • CQC Standards for care homes
  • Care Certificate
  • Guidelines set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain


The course is designed to be interactive. There will be a mix of presentation, group tasks and discussions. All attendees will be given a workbook to take away with them, and a Certificate of Attendance.

Developing Safeguarding Practice (used to be called 'Refresher')

A half day session to enable participants to discuss and develop their safeguarding knowledge and skills in a supportive learning environment. Participants should have previously attended the Safeguarding Awareness course. Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session participants should:

  • Understand the updated knowledge about safeguarding legislation and guidance.
  • Have discussed the Making Safeguarding Personal agenda and know what it means for their practice.
  • Have developed skills and knowledge in safeguarding practice.
  • Have worked with a case study from referral to conclusion of the safeguarding process and understand their role.

Extra Hands are involved in the Norfolk Medication Working Party and our training reflects Norfolk County Council’s policy. This training equips staff with the knowledge and skills to confidently support Service Users with their medication on a daily basis.

Attendees will gain an understanding of the level of support required to keep the person as independent as possible and have a general knowledge of the effect some medications may have on the Service User.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this session participants should:

  • Understand what safeguarding is and your role in safeguarding adults.

MHE Accredited - Adult Mental Health First Aid

This course is a Mental Health England accredited Adult Mental Health First Aid training course which is suitable for anybody wanting to learn more about mental health and how to support somebody who is suffering from a mental health issue. The course is led by an instructor who has a wealth of experience in Mental Health and working within the health & social care sector, who has been trained by Mental Health England to deliver this course.

Mouth Matters - Oral Healthcare

Norfolk’s Oral Health Educators offer a fully-funded service which can be delivered at no cost to your setting. They deliver interventions covering the importance of good oral hygiene, but they can link to other areas of interest where diet, especially sugar, has an impact. This service is FREE.

They are also delivering a number of free sessions this autumn.
