Harm Free Care Training

Extra Hands provide comprehensive training for individuals and companies across Norfolk.

Our 3 hour training course includes falls prevention, nutrition and hydration and pressure ulcers. It is important that staff encourage mobility wherever possible, keeping a person more active reduces muscle wasting and helps prevent falls.

Attendees will learn how to recognise signs and symptoms of malnutrition and dehydration, skin breakdown / pressure areas and whom to report concerns.

Aimed at care managers and in-house trainers, this free one-day workshop will enable participants to cascade training to front-line care staff who will:

  • be more confident using a strengths-based, person centred approach
  • be more aware of how to enable people to maintain / regain their independence following an illness or injury
  • have an increased understanding of outcome focussed care
  • be able to signpost to community resources to help maintain independence and improve wellbeing
  • be familiar with technology to help reduce isolation

The training will include a follow up session later in the year (dates and locations to be confirmed) which will provide an opportunity to discuss how participants have implemented a strengths-based approach, share good practice and explore ideas for further activity.

UEA - Finding the Words in End of Life Care

This course looks at the building blocks of communication including identifying potential barriers to communication and specific behaviours that block disclosure. It will also consider the key skills that enable a patient centred conversation and how to structure communication effectively.

Following on from this, participants will look at how to rise to the challenge of communicating with people at the end of their lives and consider the communication difficulties that can arise. Working with couples and triadic consultation will also be discussed.

The day will include a lot of experiential learning and will draw on your own practice experience.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main components in communication
  • Understand the challenges in communicating with people at the end of their life
  • Identify strategies that they will be able to use in practice to improve their communication skills with people at the end of their lives.
