Medicines Management in Care Homes

The training course is designed to equip staff with the knowledge and skills they need to ensure the safe handling and administration of medicines. Our medicines management expertise will ensure that you are fully up-to-date with current guidelines and best practice across all areas of medicines management.

Our training courses are comprehensive, and suitable for staff from all care homes including those registered to accommodate people with dementia and learning difficulties. As well as nursing and residential care home staff, the courses are also suitable for all care agency staff.

  • Record keeping
  • Safe administration and storage


Learning materials have been developed with reference to:

  • NICE guidelines
  • CQC Standards for care homes
  • Care Certificate
  • Guidelines set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

The course is designed to be interactive. There will be a mix of presentation, group tasks and discussions. All attendees will be given a workbook to take away with them, and a Certificate of Attendance.

Adult Mental Health First Aid (2 days)

Course Overview

The two-day course will:

Give a deeper understanding of the issues that impact on and relate to people’s mental health
Teach practical skills that can be used every day, including being able to spot the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and feel confident guiding people towards appropriate support

Independent research and evaluation shows that taking part in an MHFA course:

  • Raises awareness and mental health literacy
  • Reduces stigma around mental ill health and feel confident guiding people towards appropriate support
  • Boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues
  • Encourages people to start a conversation with a person who may be experiencing a mental health issue
  • Promotes early intervention which enables recovery

MHFA won’t teach you how to be a therapist, but you will be able to say you’re a Mental Health First Aider.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who would like a better understanding of mental health conditions.

Detailed Course Breakdown:

Our instructors deliver training in four manageable chunks, each with a focus on how to apply Mental Health First Aid skills:

Session 1
Mental Health First Aid, mental health, and depression.
Session 2
Depression (cont.) and suicidal crisis.
Session 3
Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm.
Session 4
Psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Everyone who attends the course will receive a copy of the MHFA manual and workbook, which are both excellent support resources. When you have completed the course you will also receive a certificate to confirm that you are a trained Mental Health First Aider.

Diabetes Awareness Training

DUET diabetes provides interactive diabetes education and training to staff at all levels in the care sector, and all our workshops are delivered by an experienced Diabetes Specialist Nurse. Our workshops are for up to 12 attendees in order to maintain an interactive learning environment.
The Diabetes Awareness Training workshop is relevant for carers/staff at all levels (including dining room staff and activity leaders for example) and lasts approximately 4 hours (with a refreshments break). It covers:

  • What diabetes is and the different types of diabetes
  • The signs and symptoms of diabetes
  • Monitoring – what checks are done to ensure that diabetes is well controlled
  • The long term effects (complications) of diabetes
  • How diabetes is treated
  • Management of high and low blood sugars
  • Sick day care
  • Dietary management of diabetes
  • Footcare

Developing Safeguarding Practice (used to be called 'Refresher')

A half day session to enable participants to discuss and develop their safeguarding knowledge and skills in a supportive learning environment. Participants should have previously attended the Safeguarding Awareness course. Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session participants should:

  • Understand the updated knowledge about safeguarding legislation and guidance.
  • Have discussed the Making Safeguarding Personal agenda and know what it means for their practice.
  • Have developed skills and knowledge in safeguarding practice.
  • Have worked with a case study from referral to conclusion of the safeguarding process and understand their role.

MHE Accredited - Adult Mental Health First Aid

This course is a Mental Health England accredited Adult Mental Health First Aid training course which is suitable for anybody wanting to learn more about mental health and how to support somebody who is suffering from a mental health issue. The course is led by an instructor who has a wealth of experience in Mental Health and working within the health & social care sector, who has been trained by Mental Health England to deliver this course.

This one-day workshop is aimed at health and social care staff and therapists who are likely to come into contact with people with dementia who are may be approaching the last year of life.
