Medicines Management in Care Homes

The training course is designed to equip staff with the knowledge and skills they need to ensure the safe handling and administration of medicines. Our medicines management expertise will ensure that you are fully up-to-date with current guidelines and best practice across all areas of medicines management.

Our training courses are comprehensive, and suitable for staff from all care homes including those registered to accommodate people with dementia and learning difficulties. As well as nursing and residential care home staff, the courses are also suitable for all care agency staff.

Course topics include:

  • Medication journey
  • Record keeping
  • Safe administration and storage

Learning materials have been developed with reference to:

  • NICE guidelines
  • CQC Standards for care homes
  • Care Certificate
  • Guidelines set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

The course is designed to be interactive. There will be a mix of presentation, group tasks and discussions. All attendees will be given a workbook to take away with them, and a Certificate of Attendance.

Health and Safety, Food Safety, Infection control and Fire Safety

Includes:

  • Hazards, employer/employee responsibilities & workplace regulations, reporting (RIDDOR etc)
  • The importance of food safety and hygiene in the preparation and handling of food, to ensure that all food handlers control food safety risk (inc. Extra Hands are involved in the Norfolk Medication Working Party and our training reflects Norfolk County Council’s policy. This training equips staff with the knowledge and skills to confidently support Service Users with their medication on a daily basis.

Extra Hands Mental Capacity Act Training gives staff an understanding of how to deal with many mental health issues.

Basic Life Support and First Aid

To understand the role of the first-aider including reference to:

  • The need for recording incidents and actions
  • Use of available equipment (“ideal” content suggestions)
  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • Administering first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (incl. seizures)
  • Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation : chest compressions and rescue breaths
  • Administering first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock (including anaphylaxis)
  • Appropriate first aid for minor injuries (incl. small cuts, grazes & bruises, minor burns & scalds, small splinters)

This course is mapped to ‘Standard 12 Basic Life Support’ of the Care Certificate standards and follows the Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines.

Practical elements include use of Resuscitation manikins and choking vest.

Also including demonstration of AED.

Developing Safeguarding Practice (used to be called 'Refresher')

A half day session to enable participants to discuss and develop their safeguarding knowledge and skills in a supportive learning environment. Participants should have previously attended the Safeguarding Awareness course. Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session participants should:

  • Understand the updated knowledge about safeguarding legislation and guidance.
  • Have discussed the Making Safeguarding Personal agenda and know what it means for their practice.
  • Have developed skills and knowledge in safeguarding practice.
