International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)

Recommendations regarding the thickening of fluids and diet descriptors are changing in line with the new international guidance. The International Dysphagia Diets Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) has a new framework for describing thickness and consistency of fluids and diet.

All advice for people referred to speech and language therapist (SALT) will have the new framework used for their dysphagia care plans from April 1st 2019.  “Stages” for drinks and fluids wll no longer be recommeded. Instead an “IDDSI level” of thickness will be recommended.

A poster outlining the framework is available here: https://www.southnorfolkccg.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/IDDSI Whole Framework Poster.pdf

If your resident is showing any of these signs of dysphagia then refer to SALT via your usual pathway.
