Learning Lessons from Safeguarding Adults Reviews

PLEASE NOTE - THE CONTENT OF THIS SESSION CHANGES COMPLETELY FROM YEAR TO YEAR, TO REFLECT NEW CASES AND DIFFERENT PRIORITIES. THE NEW YEAR STARTS ON 1ST APRIL EACH YEAR.

AIM

A one-day session to enable practitioners, in supportive, non blaming environment, to understand the key themes emerging from Safeguarding Adults Reviews. Delegates will also reflect on what the learning means for their practice with service users and their communication and joint working with staff for our partner agencies.

Safeguarding Adults Reviews are conducted when a service user has died or experienced serious harm and there are concerns about how agencies have worked together to safeguard the person. Often in these cases staff have worked diligently and with great care and concern for the service use but with the benefit of hindsight an SAR can shine a light on how staff may have been caught up in complex inter agency or family dynamics which made it difficult to accurately assess the risks to the service user or hear the service user's voice.

The course will consider our Norfolk SARs and learning emerging nationally throughout the year.

TARGET GROUP

Assistant practitioners, social workers, practice consultants, team managers, and optional for Heads of Service/Heads of Operations and Assistant Directors. Also other experienced staff in health & social care organisations throughout the county of Norfolk.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: BY THE END OF THIS SESSION PARTICIPANTS SHOULD:

  • understand the themes emerging from SARs and what it means for developing individual practice
  • have analysed a section of an anonymised SAR with a view to considering the multi agency context and the risks to the service user
  • understand the concept of static and dynamic risks and the protective / mitigating factors within a person’s life and how to balance them
  • have clarified best practice in information sharing and the multi agency dynamics which can operate to as a barrier to gathering information
  • know how to use supervision effectively to share and analyse risk
  • understand the inter relationship between the MCA and safeguarding work and how the assumption of capacity and the concept of ‘Lifestyle choice’ can detract from understanding the risk of harm
  • know how the ‘Rule of Optimism’ can operate when there are serious risks to service users and understand how to recognise this
