Diabetic Foot Screening

This workshop is particularly useful for the ‘diabetes champion’ of any care setting. It goes beyond the everyday foot care / foot health check all carers should be familiar with when looking after someone living with diabetes.

“guidance for CQC staff: inspecting the quality of care for residents with diabetes mellitus living in care homes”: section 7, a ‘risk-calculation and assessment tool for diabetes foot disease’ is stated as being one of ‘the elements of good diabetes care’. This workshop provides the tools/processes that are used to undertake an assessment and result in a risk score; the person performing the assessment is not required to make a clinical judgement.

Using NICE guidance as a framework the workshop aims to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills to competently examine and assess the diabetic foot for potential and actual problems.

As well as the theory and importance behind a diabetic foot assessment, the ‘hands on feet’ practical session allows the learners plenty of time to familiarise themselves with performing a diabetic foot assessment. It includes a competency assessment and covers:
• The definition of a foot ulcer
• The economic and personal cost of developing a foot ulcer
• When foot screening should be performed
• Who can undertake a diabetic foot assessment
• The factors contributing to someone developing a foot ulcer
• The method and steps to take when assessing the diabetic foot
• Local and national diabetic foot risk algorithms
• How to apply the correct risk score
• Suitable footwear for people with diabetes
• The causes of neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
• Practical demonstration on how to test for neuropathy and PVD
• The Ipswich Touch Test
• The process of referral for the person with diabetes at each level of risk
• Examples of diabetic foot related literature and products

The educator will observe the practical session in order to confirm competency of each learner.
